The first to my knowledge was a sandwich shop in Darlinghurst about the corner of Burton St and Foley St, just off Oxford St. It was all hands on deck and I can remember my mother taking me there to make sandwiches. I got into trouble from Auntie Peg for putting to much butter on the bread. The next shop was in Redfern, what would now be called a boutique deli. Then, the next one was a tobacconist and mens hairdresser in Marrickville Rd, Dulwich Hill, possibly still there at 497 Marrickville Rd. During this period, they were buying houses in the Newtown, Mascot area. My cousin John (Jack) Edwards rented a house from them after he married. After selling the tobacconist, Uncle Sid managed his housing portfolio and built the house at Port Hacking. |
