An old and highly respected resident of Harden, Mr George Mclaren died at an early hour on Thursday morning 25th inst, at the age of 59 years. The deceased gentleman had been iull for the last 5 weeks and during the period of two weeks immediately preceding his death was confined to his bed. The cause of death was heart attack. About 19 years ago deceased met with an accident on the railway, and ever since then he had suffered from heart trouble. Everything possible that medical skillcould do was availed to relieve him. About three months ago tyhe deceased went toi Sydney to consult an eminent doctor there, but only temporary relief was obtained.
The late George Mclaren was a native of Scotland and at the age of 17 years he came to New Zealand, where he stayed for a brief period. About 38 years ago he came to Murrumburrah and after engaging in various occupations, he took up the duties of driver for the rail board for Murrumburrah and Harden. He then entered the employ of the Railway Department, and at the time of his death held the position of stationary engine driver. He was the oldest railway employee at Harden, and was highly respected and esteemed by all the men on the railway ; and in addition was a good and worthy citizen of the town.

Note: Uncle George lived with his wife at Turrella on the East Hill Rail line. He worked for Nock and Kirbys, a large manufacturing and engineering supply company in Tempe, Sydney. He could source the most amazing pieces of engineering and tools to be found. He was not a well person, overweight and suffering from tropical disease he caught during the war in New Quinea.

Note: I was 8 yrs old. Packed off to stay with Auntie Nell in Bellfields. This was a regular occurence when a family crisis occurred.

Note: Grandma was cremated at Sutherland District Cemetery and her ashes were in a Rose Garden there. I regularly took my mother Hazel there to visit the memorial, place some flowers and polish the brass plague.
